5/28/2023 0 Comments Antifreeze antidote![]() ![]() Since antifreeze doesn't get broken down nearly as easily as ethanol, if you get drunk (ingest a bunch of ethanol), that enzyme goes after the ethanol instead (low hanging fruit, I suppose) and pretty much ignores the antifreeze.Īfter a while, your kidneys are able to filter out the antifreeze and you pee it out. When it does this, it produces something far more toxic which is what kills you. Your liver produces an enzyme that looks at antifreeze and says "that looks like alcohol!" and tries to break it down. It's not the antifreeze that is harmful to you - it's what your body turns it into. For those who don't understand enough chemistry: It's actually quite brilliant how it works if you read the article. Keep it out of reach of children and pets! With that said. It is highly toxic and can easily kill them. Children and pets are most likely to accidentally ingest antifreeze because it has a sweet flavor. Edit: DISCLAIMER - Do not do this at home!
